CollectiveX - Groupware Web Service goes A la Carte

August 16th, 2006 by edtechlab

CollectiveX is now offering a basic subscription of their groupware service for free. In their new promotion, the core services are free.

  • Unlimited members
  • Social Networking features
  • 1 Shared Calendar
  • Discussion Forum
  • 10 Megabytes of storage for sharing files and media.

You can buy additional features which come with a monthly fee that are all set at $9 dollars.

  • Remove Advertising
  • Group Permission Controls
  • Enhanced Security
  • Additional Storage Space  3 gigs.

This free core services may be ideal for small workgroups who need to work more around communication issues than share large amounts of files. 10 megabytes is not a lot of storage space. Any educators using CollectiveX?

If you are thinking about buying additional services, then I would do the math and compare the offering with Basecamp by 37 signals.

Blogger in beta

August 15th, 2006 by edtechlab

Blogger offers new features on new blogger accounts and for some of the present Blogger users. If you are doing teacher inquiry research, a private blog makes sense, since delicate data may be placed online. I have used private blogs to do group planning.
Blogger Buzz: Blogger in beta
With the beta you can:

* Categorize your posts with labels
* Control who can read your blog
* Change the appearance and content of your blog with your mouse instead of HTML

Steve Rubel at Micro Persuasion mentions that if you choose to make your blog private, one needs to turn of one’s feed so that the search engines do not have access to your data via the feed.

August 14th, 2006 by edtechlab

I can imagine teachers, students and parents contributing video on what they know how to do in an informative way so others may learn a skill.  VideoJug is a site that lets you upload video on a skill you know how to do. What do you think?

I wonder if our school district’s internet filter already has blocked this site.
